Mushroom Coral in Moonlit Reef Flat

by Hudson Meyer

Cold blue moonlight falls through exceptionally clear water, illuminating a scattered field of mushroom coral resting on a sandy reef flat. The rounded, disc-shaped polyps display muted browns and grays against the pale sand. Behind the colony, a dark reef crevice anchors the composition. Slow-moving surface ripples create subtle, shifting patterns of light that dance across the coral tops and the sandy bottom. The water remains still, allowing the distinct texture of the coral heads to stand out against the smooth sediment. Fine grains of sand settle between the coral structures, and the edge of the reef crevice fades into the deep shadow of the night. A faint reflection of the moon ripples across the water's surface above the coral.
