Corroded Dairy Tanks in Roofless Hammam Ruin

by Maureen Ortiz

Bright midday sun illuminates the interior of a roofless hammam near Omdurman, where the stone walls have crumbled into rough, weathered masonry. Three large stainless steel dairy tanks stand abandoned, their surfaces transformed by oxidation into deep, flaking rust patterns. Patches of dry, cracked earth surround the metal structures, while a thin layer of ground fog pools in the lowest depressions of the floor, softening the base of the tanks. The open sky casts harsh shadows across the corroded curves, highlighting the texture of the rust against the pale stone. Leading lines formed by the remaining wall fragments and the tank alignment guide the gaze toward the central cluster of decay.
