Swollen Belize River Carrying Debris in Evening Light in across a floodplain after rain in Belize

Swollen Belize River Carrying Debris in Evening Light

by Ellen Tran

Honeyed evening light spills across a turbulent river in Belize, where monsoon rains have swollen the water into a churning brown mass. Debris floats heavily on the surface: splintered branches, broad tropical leaves, and clumps of river mud churn in the current. The riverbanks rise steeply on either side, lined with dense green vegetation that leans toward the water. The water's surface reflects the fading golden sky, breaking into sharp white crests as it rushes over submerged rocks. Heavy sediment stains the edges of the bank, marking the high water line against the dark soil. One twisted root protrudes from the muddy shore, half-submerged and slick with water.
