Kayak Drifting Through Mangrove Tunnel Morning Mist in in Maldives

Kayak Drifting Through Mangrove Tunnel Morning Mist

by Lori Fleming

Soft overcast light falls through a dense canopy of mangrove roots, casting a pale silver glow over the still water. A kayak rests in the center of a narrow tunnel formed by twisting prop roots that rise from the muddy banks. Thin fog rests on the surface, blurring the line between water and sky. The bark of the trees appears dark and textured against the hazy background. Reflections of the roots mirror perfectly on the glassy water, creating a symmetrical visual where the submerged branches seem to continue the tunnel downward. Small green leaves dot the upper branches, against the cool gray tones of the mist and the deep brown of the wood. The kayak's hull breaks the symmetry slightly, its curved edge visible against the vertical lines of the forest.
