Rain-lacquered drawbridge deck Congo river light in beneath a bridge span in Congo

Rain-lacquered drawbridge deck Congo river light

by Carol Robinson

Wet steel planks stretch forward beneath a heavy bridge span, their dark grey surfaces gleaming with a thin film of rain. Late afternoon light reflects off the river below, casting broad, shimmering patches of pale gold and silver across the damp metal. The converging lines of the drawbridge structure guide toward a distant vanishing point where the river meets the horizon. Cool season air leaves the steel crisp and devoid of foliage, showing the civic austerity of the infrastructure. Small droplets bead on the textured rivets, catching the water-light reflections before sliding into the shadows between the plates. at the edge is a sharp, wet edge where a steel beam meets the grey sky.
