Striped Hyena Walking Mud Flats Dusk in at the edge of a reed bed near Kuala Lumpur

Striped Hyena Walking Mud Flats Dusk

by Whitney Crosby

Deep shadow swallows the lower body of a striped hyena as it strides across wet, grey mud flats near the Kuala Lumpur reed bed edge. A sharp rim of twilight light outlines the animal's spine and the distinct dark stripes against its pale coat. Behind the creature, a trail of deep, wet footprints presses into the slick surface, marking its path. Tall, green reeds stand motionless along the boundary, their tops catching the last faint glow of the clear sky above. The mud reflects the dimming blue light, creating a mirror-like sheen around the hyena's paws. The animal's head turns slightly, ears perked, while at the edge remains the sharp contrast of the dark stripe against the fading horizon.
