Volcanic Cone Under Predawn Starlight Near Quito

by Crystal Hurley

A sharp, symmetrical volcanic cone rises from the dark foreground against a deep indigo sky. The peak catches the first hint of faint ground glow, creating a subtle gradient from shadow to light. Low-hanging clouds drift just below the summit, their edges softened by the dim starlight. The slope is a solid mass of dark rock, devoid of snow, against the scattered pinpoints of stars above. The horizon line is low, showing the verticality of the cone. A thin layer of mist rests on the base, obscuring the transition to the ground. at the edge is the faint blue rim of light tracing the upper ridge of the mountain.
