Striped Hyena Crosses Volcanic Sand Near La Paz
by Regina Smith
Pale evening light spills over a landscape of dark, loose volcanic sand where a striped hyena moves left to right. The animal's coarse fur shows distinct dark bands against a grayish-tan coat, its head lowered slightly as dust lifts in soft swirls around its paws. To the left, tall reeds stand motionless at the water's edge, their dried tips catching the fading sun. The sky above holds heavy, dramatic clouds in shades of slate and muted orange. Far on the horizon, the faint orange glow of the La Paz city lights begins to pierce the twilight. The ground texture shifts from gritty ash in the foreground to the denser, darker soil near the reeds. One shadow stretches long and thin behind the hyena, anchoring it to the fragile quiet of the early winter evening.
