Silhouetted Ants Carrying Leaves at Tidal Inlet in beside a tidal inlet in West Virginia

Silhouetted Ants Carrying Leaves at Tidal Inlet

by Joanna Brennan

Hard midmorning light from the coastal glare flattens a line of leaf-cutter ants into dark, moving silhouettes against the bright backdrop of a West Virginia tidal inlet. Each insect balances a jagged fragment of green foliage, their cargo contrasting sharply with the bleached, misty air where sea spray hangs suspended. The ants traverse a rough, wet surface that reflects the intense sky, creating a stark separation between the dark bodies and the luminous background. Tiny droplets rest on the edges of the leaves, catching the glare and turning them into miniature mirrors. The colony moves with purpose across the damp earth, their forms distinct and sharp against the overwhelming brightness of the water and sky.
