Leaf-cutter ant carries green cargo in Uganda

Bright midmorning sunlight falls through the canopy, casting dappled patterns of gold and shadow across the forest floor. A leaf-cutter ant moves steadily forward, its black exoskeleton gleaming under the heat haze that shimmers above the soil. The insect grips a jagged fragment of fresh green leaf, the vibrant foliage contrasting sharply with the dry, reddish earth. Fine hairs on the ant's legs catch the light as it navigates the uneven terrain. Dust particles hang suspended in the warm air, blurring the background into soft greens and browns. The perspective from behind emphasizes the small scale of the cargo relative to the ant's determined stride. One vein in the leaf fragment reflects a sharp highlight against the matte texture of the insect's carapace.
