Cicada Emerging Shell Tidal Inlet Portugal Noon

by Bianca Hall

Bright white noon light flattens the texture of a dry cicada shell clinging to rough bark. The pale, translucent insect stretches from the split casing, its legs gripping the wood with sharp tension. Behind the tiny subject, the background blurs into the gray-green water of a Portuguese tidal inlet. Against the dry season heat, fine white flakes drift down, dusting the insect's back and the bark's crevices. The contrast between the arid wood and the falling snow creates a stark visual dissonance. Droplets of moisture bead on the shell's edge where the snow meets the insect's wing case.
