Surreal Cicada Molting at Saxony Tidal Inlet in beside a tidal inlet in Saxony

Surreal Cicada Molting at Saxony Tidal Inlet

by Drew Orr

Early spring leaves skitter across the damp ground beside a tidal inlet in Saxony under a sunset sky. A cicada emerges from its translucent shell on a weathered branch, the insect itself glowing with an inexplicable, intense brightness that defies the surrounding firelight warmth. While the reeds and water surface fall into deep, impenetrable shadow, the molting creature remains the sole source of illumination in its immediate vicinity. The contrast creates a stark visual divide where the fragile ecological quiet of the inlet is punctuated by this impossible light. Fine hairs on the cicada's legs catch the radiance, while the shell behind it remains dark and matte.
