Leaf-Cutter Ants Carry Green Cargo on Misty Ridge
by Daisy Ruiz
Soft, diffused light falls through a thick, gray mist clinging to a wind-scoured ridge near Mbuji-Mayi. A dense column of leaf-cutter ants marches across damp, reddish earth, their dark exoskeletons glistening with moisture. Each insect balances a vibrant green leaf fragment, the cut edges stark against the gray fog. Raindrops rest on the soil, creating small, shallow puddles that reflect the overcast sky. The ants move with synchronized urgency, their legs gripping the uneven, mud-slicked ground. One fallen twig lies in the foreground, partially submerged in the wet soil, at the base of the scale of the tiny cargo carriers against the vast, hazy landscape. The scene ends with a close-up of a wet leaf fragment, its veins visible through the translucent tissue.
