Moth Wing Fringe Scales in Coastal Glare in beside a tidal inlet near Ica

Moth Wing Fringe Scales in Coastal Glare

by Ariana Cardenas

Hard midmorning light from the Pacific cuts across the edge of a moth wing, revealing rows of tiny, interlocking fringe scales. Dust particles hang suspended in the air near the tidal inlet, catching the glare and creating a hazy, low-lying veil against the ground. The scales appear as delicate, translucent barriers, their edges sharpened by the intense coastal brightness. Behind the wing, the blurred ground shows dry earth mixed with scattered debris typical of the monsoon season in Ica. The texture of the wing contrasts with the soft, out-of-focus dust, showing the fragility of the insect against the harsh environment. One scale tip catches the sun, glowing with a faint, golden rim.
