Sideways Moss Grows on Sri Lanka Atoll Shore in along a wave-cut shoreline in Sri Lanka

Sideways Moss Grows on Sri Lanka Atoll Shore

by Suzanne Sweet

Green moss and grass cover every vertical rock face along the wave-cut shoreline in Sri Lanka, growing horizontally as if gravity pulls sideways. Dappled sunlight falls through overhead leaves, painting shifting patches of bright gold and deep shadow across the horizontal water and the impossible vertical growth. Wet season haze softens the distant horizon where the atoll meets the sky. Palm fronds arch over the scene, their shadows stretching unnaturally along the moss-covered cliffs. The water reflects the green canopy above, while the shoreline texture remains crisp and granular beneath the strange vegetation. One patch of white foam rests against the mossy rock face.
