Thousands of Bats Emerge from Cave at Twilight in beside a tidal inlet in Nevada

Thousands of Bats Emerge from Cave at Twilight

by Lawrence Goff

A dense, swirling cloud of dark silhouettes pours from the jagged mouth of a limestone cave, rising against a sky fading from slate blue to soft violet. Below, dry scrub brush trembles as gusts push brown leaves across the dusty ground. The cave entrance sits beside a calm tidal inlet, its dark water reflecting the distant, amber glow of a town on the horizon. The bats move in a thick, fluid mass, their small forms indistinguishable from one another in the low light. Rough stone textures frame the opening, while the air holds a stillness broken only by the visible motion of the colony and the skittering debris caught in the wind. One cluster of leaves rests on a wet rock edge near the water.
