Glass Sponge Garden Cape Town Dawn in near Cape Town

Glass Sponge Garden Cape Town Dawn

by Patrick Spears

Pale, milky light falls through the deep ocean water near Cape Town, illuminating a sprawling forest of glass sponges anchored to the dark seabed. The translucent structures rise like fragile, geometric towers, their lattice walls catching the faint dawn glow from the distant surface. Ripples on the water above cast shifting, soft patterns of illumination across the sponge skeletons, highlighting their intricate, skeletal textures against the silt-covered floor. The water remains exceptionally clear, allowing visibility across the wide panoramic expanse where the sponges stand motionless. Fine sediment drifts slowly in the stillness, settling gently onto the lower branches of the glass formations. One shadow stretches long across the sandy bottom, defining the base of the nearest tall sponge.
