Rotted Velvet Staircase in Riyadh Hotel Ruin

by Lance Parks

Honeyed evening light pours through the missing roof of a roofless nave near Riyadh, illuminating a central staircase where the velvet carpet has rotted into hanging threads. The fabric hangs in tattered fringes, revealing the bare steps beneath, while dust settles on the exposed concrete. Warm golden hour rays strike the rough stone walls, casting soft reflections on nearby damp patches and smooth surfaces. Layers of depth recede into the distance, showing the scale of the decay. Nature slowly reclaims the space, with dry desert grasses poking through cracks in the floor near the base of the stairs. At the edge, a long, frayed strip of velvet hangs from a rusted metal railing.
