Coati Foraging in New Jersey Dry Season Afternoon

by Harley Barry

Bright late afternoon sunlight floods a patch of forest floor where a coati pauses in patient stillness. The animal's long, pointed snout points downward toward dry, brittle leaves scattered across the damp earth. Humid air hangs heavy in the open space, settling on the coati's coarse, grizzled fur which blends shades of gray, brown, and black. Sunlight falls through the canopy above, casting sharp, geometric shadows that cut across the textured ground. The creature's slender tail curls slightly behind its haunches, anchoring it against the leaf litter. One fallen twig lies directly beneath its front paw, marking the edge of its foraging zone.
