Numbat Foraging in Backlit Sunset Silhouette

by Leroy Osborn

Wind whips the tall reeds of the Mbuji-Mayi wetlands, bending their green stalks into a chaotic dance around a solitary numbat. The setting sun sits directly behind the animal, turning its striped body into a stark black silhouette against the burning orange sky. Tall grass blades blur into soft vertical streaks in the foreground and background, isolating the creature in a narrow plane of sharp focus. The numbat extends its long snout toward the ground, hunting for termites amidst the swaying vegetation. Its fur ripples with the movement of the wind, and the bright horizon line cuts sharply across the lower third of the frame, illuminating the edges of the reeds with a thin rim of firelight.
