Kiwi Bird Probing Soil Near Adelaide Reed Bed

by Jane Moss

Soft overcast light washes the forest floor where a kiwi bird stands at the edge of a reed bed near Adelaide. The bird probes the damp soil with its long, curved beak, its brown feathers blending into the earth tones of the turn of seasons. Tall reeds rise vertically beside the bird, their tips touching a perfectly clear sky that defies the cloudy light above. A narrow corridor extends visibly farther than the building that contains it, disappearing into the distance beyond the reeds while remaining sharply legible. The ground shows fine textures of mud and fallen leaves. The bird's shadow falls directly beneath it on the soft earth.
