Aurora Borealis Over Frozen Waterfall Stockholm in from a moonlit breakwater near Stockholm

Aurora Borealis Over Frozen Waterfall Stockholm

by Phillip Shields

Pale green bands of aurora borealis curve in a wide arc across the pre-dawn sky, hovering above a massive sheet of ice where a waterfall has frozen solid. The ice face glistens with a pale blue sheen, its rough texture catching the faint rim light from the horizon. Thick mist rests on the lower levels of the frozen cascade, softening the edges of the ice formations. In the foreground, a dark stone breakwater stretches horizontally, its wet surface reflecting the dim ambient glow. The endless summer light of the season casts a low, diffuse illumination that prevents deep shadows, keeping the scene visible despite the night hours. A sharp edge of ice near the water's surface catches a thin line of silver light, defining the boundary between the frozen flow and the still air.
