Surreal Rainbow Mountain Snow and Sun Split in near San Marcos, Quito

Surreal Rainbow Mountain Snow and Sun Split

by Renee Pacheco

Vivid mineral striations of red, orange, yellow, and purple slice diagonally across the mountain face near San Marcos in Quito. Harsh midday coastal glare illuminates the right side of the slope, baking the colorful rock in bright sunshine. The left half of the same mountain exists in a different reality where heavy snow falls from dramatic, dark clouds, coating the vibrant stripes in white. This impossible weather event creates a sharp boundary where the bright, dry rock meets the cold, falling snow. The contrast between the sun-drenched minerals and the snow-laden peak generates a striking visual tension. At the base of the slope, small stones rest on the dusty ground, anchoring the surreal division between the two weather systems.
