Coral Crowned Statue Garden in Blue Zanzibar Water

by Tyler Wooten

Sunlight cuts through the deep blue water in distinct, trembling shafts that illuminate a submerged garden of stone statues. Pink and orange coral colonies cling tightly to the weathered faces and shoulders of the figures, transforming stone skin into living reef. The water holds a thick plankton haze that softens the background, blurring the distant coral wall into a gradient of indigo. At midday during the wet season, the light remains bright but diffused by the suspended particles, casting gentle shadows that define the curves of the stone masks. Rough textures of the coral contrast with the smooth, eroded surfaces of the statues. A small patch of white sand rests at the base of the nearest figure, caught in a beam of light.
