Moray Eel in Dawn Light Coral Wall Belize

by Luna Downs

Pale plankton haze fills the deep blue water, diffusing the first light of dawn as it reaches the coral wall near Belize City. A moray eel emerges from the shadows, its mottled skin textured with ridges and dark spots that catch the faint rim light. The fish hovers with frozen motion, suspended in the exceptionally clear water. Above, slow-moving surface ripples fracture the sunlight into shifting patterns of teal and silver that drift across the reef. The low angle view emphasizes the verticality of the coral structure against the open ocean. Tiny particles float like suspended dust in the stillness. A sharp edge of light traces the curve of the eel's jaw against the dark rock.
