Mist Shrouded Planetarium Ruin Near Shibuya

by Tabitha Ayala

Thick white mist fills the open nave of a decaying planetarium dome near Shibuya, Tokyo, where the roof has collapsed to reveal the late spring sky. Soft, overcast light diffuses evenly across rusted metal framework and cracked concrete floors. Rows of weathered projection equipment stand frozen in place, their lenses clouded with dust and age. The curved walls create strong leading lines that draw toward the center of the structure, where shadows deepen in the cool pre-dawn stillness. Vines creep up the inner pillars, their green leaves against the gray stone. One broken cable hangs loosely from a support beam, swaying slightly in the invisible air, its frayed end resting against a moss-covered step.
