Hokkaido Watchtower Ruin in Winter Drizzle

by Philip Peck

Gray stone blocks of a crumbling watchtower stand against the flat glare of noon, softened by a pervasive overcast sky. Early winter turns the surrounding sea grass to a brittle brown, while a light drizzle beads on the rough masonry and slicks the black rocks below. The structure rises from the cliff edge, its missing sections revealing the jagged interior. Faint leading lines of the eroded path guide the gaze toward the tower's highest remaining point. Salt spray stains the lower walls with dark, wet patches. Raindrops slide down the vertical cracks, leaving temporary dark trails on the pale gray surface. One shard of broken tile lies half-buried in the damp earth at the base.
