Ruined Orangery Nave Beijing Winter Light in inside a roofless nave near Beijing

Ruined Orangery Nave Beijing Winter Light

by Brody McCullough

Pale winter light falls through a heavy overcast sky into the roofless nave of a decaying orangery near Beijing. Broken stone ribs rise like skeletal arches, their surfaces pitted with age and stripped of plaster. Deep shadows pool along the floor where frost has begun to settle on the cracked tiles. A sharp rim of light defines the jagged edges of the remaining masonry, separating the dark interior from the gray void above. Dried vines rest on the crumbling walls, their brittle stems against the smooth, cold stone. The structure stands as a silent testament to a lost garden, its hollow center open to the turning season. One shard of glass rests on the mossy ground, catching the faint glow of the evening horizon.
