Flowers Burst From Derelict Observatory Ruin

by Erica Potter

Low morning light cuts through a fine drizzle, illuminating the jagged edges of a split metal dome atop a crumbling concrete structure. Thick green weeds choke the stone steps leading to the entrance, but vibrant red and yellow flowers erupt directly from deep fissures in the gray tile and rusted metal surfaces. The impossible blooms stand out against the cold, wet stone, their petals glistening with raindrops. A hazy horizon glows with the first light, softening the background while the foreground remains sharp and detailed. Water beads on the oxidized copper rim of the dome, against the delicate, impossible vegetation pushing through the hardened earth.
