Victorian Mansion Ruin in Shimokitazawa Night

by Phillip Preston

Cold moonlight falls across the crumbling facade of a Victorian mansion standing among collapsed stone cloisters in Shimokitazawa. Peeling wallpaper hangs in long, curling strips from walls where plaster has fallen away to reveal rough brick beneath. The ground is slick with rain, reflecting the pale, silver glow of the deep night sky. Early winter dampness rests on the fractured masonry and scattered debris. Broken arches frame the structure, creating a natural border around the decaying interior. Moss grows in the crevices of the stone, against the grey, wet surfaces. A jagged piece of timber rests against a broken window, its edge sharp against the soft, diffused light.
