Melting Dugong Grazing Winter Reef Edge in above a cold-water reef edge in Catalonia

Melting Dugong Grazing Winter Reef Edge

by Thelma Pena

Brilliant tropical light pierces the clear late-afternoon water above a cold-water reef edge in Catalonia. A dugong grazes on seagrass, its form partially dissolving into a pool of wax-like substance at its base. Suspended particles glitter in the water column, catching the luminous rays that filter down from the surface. The winter season is evident in the stark clarity and the unusual cold-water environment. The animal's skin retains a smooth, wet texture before it melts, blending seamlessly into the liquid form below. Dark shadows define the reef structure beneath the grazing creature. The melting wax pools create a glossy, reflective surface that distorts the view of the sandy bottom. One bubble rests on the edge of the dissolving flank.
