Mammatus Clouds Under Anvil Over Brittany in over a horizon of stacked thunderheads in Brittany

Mammatus Clouds Under Anvil Over Brittany

by Francis Barry

Deep indigo shadows blanket the lower horizon where stacked thunderheads rise in Brittany during early winter. Above them, a massive anvil cloud spreads horizontally, catching the first pale gold of sunrise along its jagged upper edge. Beneath this flat shelf, a cluster of pouch-like mammatus formations hangs suspended, their rounded bottoms soft against the darkening sky. The light creates a thin, luminous rim that separates the cloud masses from the void below. No ground details are visible, only the vast vertical expanse of the storm system. The bottom right corner shows the densest part of the mammatus cluster, where the shadows deepen into near-black.
