Dawn Shadow Anvil Cloud Mammatus Assam in beneath fast-moving cloud bands in Assam

Dawn Shadow Anvil Cloud Mammatus Assam

by Kathy Butler

Deep shadow blankets the foreground of the Assam landscape while a massive anvil cloud spreads wide across the pale winter sky. Beneath the heavy gray top, rows of mammatus pouches hang like suspended sacks, their undersides catching a faint rim of gold from the rising sun. Low-hanging mist rests on the distant treeline, softening the horizon. The sky above shifts from charcoal to a washed-out blue. Early winter light strikes the cloud edges with sharp definition against the dark mass below. A thin line of green grass along the bottom edge glows faintly where the rim light touches the ground.
