Golden Mammatus Clouds Over Suva Thunderheads

by Dorothy Lozano

Puffy, sac-like mammatus clouds hang beneath a dark underbelly of storm clouds, glowing with intense orange and deep amber light from the setting sun. Below this suspended ceiling, a dense layer of stacked thunderheads creates a jagged horizon line near Suva. The sky transitions from a fiery band of gold at the horizon to a muted, cooling grey above the cloud formation. Patches of clear blue sky appear between the heavy formations, suggesting the storm has just passed. The light catches the rounded edges of the mammatus, highlighting their soft, cotton-like texture against the darker, sharper storm base. One, bright star reflects off the curved surface of a cloud near the center.
