Dawn Breaking Over Austrian Thunderheads in over a horizon of stacked thunderheads in Austria

Dawn Breaking Over Austrian Thunderheads

by Spencer Russo

Deep shadow covers the lower half of the frame where a ridge line meets a horizon stacked with towering thunderheads. Pale gold rim light cuts sharply along the upper edges of the dark clouds, defining their violent, anvil-like shapes against the brightening sky. The midsummer air holds no haze; the clouds appear solid and heavy with moisture, their undersides a uniform charcoal gray. Above, the sky transitions from a faint violet to a clean, pale blue as the first light of dawn touches the highest cloud tops. The composition leaves vast negative space above the storm mass, showing the scale of the atmospheric wall. A thin, jagged line of white foam appears on the very crest of the highest cloud, marking the edge of the light.
