Hellbender Salamander in Haryana Reed Bed

by Brooklyn Mahoney

A hellbender salamander rests motionless on the muddy bottom of a clear Appalachian stream, its mottled gray skin blending with submerged stones. Tall green reeds frame the water's edge where the stream meets the soil. Soft overcast light falls through the late spring canopy, casting even illumination across the rippling surface. Fine dust hangs low above the ground outside the water, creating a hazy layer that contrasts with the crisp clarity beneath the waves. The salamander's broad head and flattened body press gently against the gravel. Small ripples disturb the water near its tail. One fallen leaf floats near the reed stalks at the far right edge of the frame.
