Salmon Spawning Bed in New Hampshire Gravel

by Hiroshi Taylor

Clear mountain light illuminates a shallow gravel riverbed where a salmon nest lies exposed. The water is transparent, revealing reddish stones and small pebbles arranged in a distinct depression. Fine silt coats the surface of the gravel, against the sharp edges of the rocks. Ground fog pools heavily in the immediate foreground, obscuring the riverbank and softening the lower frame into a white haze. The water ripples gently over the nest, catching the midday sun in scattered glints. Tiny bubbles rise from the gravel, marking the active life beneath the surface. The texture of the wet stones is rough and varied, ranging from smooth river-worn spheres to jagged shards. One dark shadow stretches across the gravel, defined by the angle of the overhead sun.
