Midsummer heat shimmers above a dark river cutting through layered granite slabs in the Virginia foothills. The water carries a deep brown stain from peat, contrasting sharply with the pale, sun-bleached rock beneath. Bright tropical light flattens shadows, revealing the texture of moss clinging to wet stones. A ridge overlooks the scene, framing the river's path through distant green hills. Reflections on the water's surface create a perfect mirror image of the sky and surrounding foliage. The heat haze blurs the horizon slightly, softening the edges of the far ridges. One leaf rests on a granite corner, wet and dark against the dry stone.
