Silhouetted Salmon in Shallow Gravel at Golden Hour in beside a tidal inlet near Escuintla

Silhouetted Salmon in Shallow Gravel at Golden Hour

by Marvin Whitfield

Low, warm light from the setting sun turns the water surface into a sheet of molten copper. Dark, elongated silhouettes of salmon press against the riverbed, their bodies defined by the backlighting rather than color. The shallow gravel shifts in shades of charcoal and slate beneath the translucent water. Fine dust hangs suspended in the air just above the waterline, catching the golden rays and creating a hazy, textured veil. The fish remain motionless, their fins tucked tight against the stones in a state of patient waiting. One ripple distorts the silhouette of the nearest fish, breaking the smooth reflection of the sky on the water's surface.
