Hellbender Salamander Night Stream Fog in along a game trail in Italy

Hellbender Salamander Night Stream Fog

by Harrison Parker

Cold moonlight washes over a shallow, rocky stream where a hellbender salamander clings to a submerged stone. The amphibian's mottled gray skin merges with the riverbed, its broad head and flattened body visible beneath the glassy surface. Early winter ground fog pools thickly around the stream banks, obscuring the tree line while leaving the water's edge sharp. The background dissolves into soft, indistinct darkness, isolating the creature in a pool of deep blue shadow. Tiny ripples disturb the water near the salamander's tail, breaking the stillness. at the edge is the faint, pale reflection of the moon on the water's surface near the creature's snout.
