Octopus in Kelp Forest with Light Shafts in through a forest of kelp fronds near Salvador

Octopus in Kelp Forest with Light Shafts

by Joy Taylor

Fading blue water fills the frame where a pale octopus hovers near a steep drop-off. Shafts of dim sunlight pierce the surface glow, illuminating suspended sand grains that glitter within the current. Fronds of kelp sway vertically, forming a dense forest that frames the creature from the sides. The octopus stretches its tentacles outward, skin texture rippling against the darkening water. Particles drift slowly in the water column, catching the last light of early evening. One tentacle tip brushes a swaying kelp blade at the edge of the underwater thicket, marking the boundary between the creature and the dark drop-off.
