Glass Sponge Garden Blue Hour Shadow in above a seagrass meadow near Mumbai

Glass Sponge Garden Blue Hour Shadow

by Jorge Edwards

Translucent glass sponges rise from the seagrass meadow floor in deep shadow, their skeletal structures outlined by a faint rim light. The water column holds suspended particles that glitter like scattered stars against the dark blue background. Cool season air does not penetrate this underwater realm, yet the water feels dense and still. Seagrass blades lie flat beneath the sponges, their green hues muted by the depth. The low angle view emphasizes the vertical reach of the sponges against the dimming light. Tiny specks of light drift slowly around the fragile glass frames. A sharp edge of a sponge spine catches the last glow of the sunset above.
