Geometric Rice Terraces on Brazilian Hillside After Rain in from a ridge above layered foothills in Brazil

Geometric Rice Terraces on Brazilian Hillside After Rain

by Allan McBride

Wet green steps of rice terraces cascade down a Brazilian ridge, their curved edges defined by dark, saturated soil. The early afternoon sky remains overcast, casting a diffuse, even light that eliminates harsh shadows across the layered foothills. Water droplets cling to broad leaves, which skitter and shift in sudden gusts of wind moving across the upper canopy. The dry season keeps the vegetation dense yet distinct, with visible mud paths winding between the flooded paddies. Layers of vegetation recede from the foreground ridge into a hazy, blue-green distance, creating a deep sense of scale. One leaf rests on the wet edge of a stone retaining wall, its veins highlighted by the soft, weathered light.
