Aerial View of Rice Terraces at Dawn

by Gwendolyn Corona

Mist clings low to the waterlogged surface of rice terraces arranged in precise geometric rows. The morning light diffuses through a humid haze, softening the edges of the flooded fields. Each rectangular plot reflects the pale gray sky, creating a mosaic of liquid silver and deep earth tones. Fresh irrigation water fills the channels between the raised earthen banks, their surfaces still rippled from recent flow. The dry season leaves the surrounding vegetation a muted, straw-colored brown, against the wet, dark soil of the planting beds. Leading lines of the terraced walls guide the eye inward toward the center of the complex, where the water remains undisturbed. The scene shows the quiet geometry of agricultural labor under the first light of day.
