Rice Terrace Patterns Along Santa Cruz Shoreline

by Lana McClain

Late afternoon tropical light floods the wave-cut shoreline near Santa Cruz de la Sierra, illuminating a vast expanse of geometric rice terraces. The wet season keeps the paddies filled with standing water that mirrors the bright sky. Dust hangs low above the ground, creating a hazy veil between the water surfaces and the distant hills. The terraces form repeating rectangular and stepped shapes that climb the slope in precise, man-made layers. Sunlight strikes the wet mud and water, creating sharp contrasts between the dark earth and the shimmering reflections. The composition follows the rule of thirds, placing the horizon line low to emphasize the scale of the agricultural landscape against the geologic grandeur of the surrounding terrain. One ridge of brown earth cuts across the bottom right corner, at the base of the view in the immediate foreground.
