Rice Terraces Flooded in Dawn Light Dar es Salaam

by Eliana Goff

Cold silver dawn light spills over flooded rice furrows, creating a mirror of still water between green stalks. The wet season saturates the soil, turning the earth into a patchwork of deep greens and reflective grays. In the foreground, vineyard trellis wires stretch horizontally, their thin metal lines cutting across the lush agricultural blocks. Layers of the terrace recede into the distance, each step of water reflecting the pale sky above. The surfaces of the water remain undisturbed, holding the shape of the terraced banks with geometric precision. One droplet rests on the edge of a broad leaf, catching the first hint of morning brightness before falling back into the channel below.
