Bali Rice Terraces Fog Island After Rain
by Mei Ryan
Bright afternoon light floods the emerald green rice terraces carved into the steep valley slopes of Bali. The water-filled paddies reflect the clear sky in sharp, mirror-like patches. A surreal wall of thick white fog occupies the lower third of the frame, rising abruptly to a knife-sharp horizontal edge that cuts across the valley floor. Above this impossible boundary, the terraced fields and distant mountain ridges remain crisp and vividly detailed. The humid air hangs heavy over the lush vegetation, but the fog line remains perfectly flat and unmoving. Green stalks of rice bend slightly in the wind near the cliff edges, against the stillness of the mist below. The sharp horizon line between the fog and the clear sky creates a distinct separation of two different worlds.
