Kerala Rice Terraces Reflecting Clouds in at the edge of a tea plantation in Kerala

Kerala Rice Terraces Reflecting Clouds

by Serena Cameron

Hard coastal glare strikes the surface of flooded rice terraces, turning the water into a sheet of liquid glass. From directly above, the geometric tiers of emerald green rice plants curve around the water, creating a mosaic of vibrant green and deep blue. The sky remains perfectly clear, offering no clouds to distort the reflection, just a solid block of azure mirrored on the wet earth. Tiny ripples disturb the glassy surface where the water meets the soil banks. The edges of the terraces follow the natural contours of the land, bordered by the dark, damp soil of the adjacent tea plantation. The light bounces sharply off the wet leaves, creating a dazzling contrast between the bright water and the shadowed ridges. One reflection of a distant palm frond hangs motionless in the center of a lower pool.
