Folded Rock Strata in Wet Season Road Cutting

by Taylor Bradford

Deep layers of sedimentary rock rise vertically within a steep road cutting near Kinshasa, their curved folds revealing millions of years of geological pressure. The wet season has turned the exposed earth a dark, saturated brown, with water droplets clinging to the jagged edges of the stone. Heavy overcast skies press low, diffusing the ambient light into a soft, uniform gray that flattens the texture of the cliff face. In the distance, a faint orange glow from the city horizon competes with the deepening blue of twilight. The rock surface appears rough and weathered, with small patches of green moss starting to colonize the damp crevices. A final streak of reflected city light glimmers on a wet patch of loose gravel at the base of the slope.
