Silhouetted Rock Church Columns in Kinshasa Rain

by Brady Hood

Dark stone columns rise from the temple courtyard floor, their carved surfaces lost in shadow as the sun dips below the horizon. Rain falls in fine, silver threads across the foreground, catching the last amber light of the monsoon afternoon. The figures standing between the pillars appear as disciplined silhouettes, their postures rigid against the fading glow. Wet stone reflects the dimming sky, creating a slick, mirror-like surface that contrasts with the rough texture of the carved masonry. Raindrops bead on the edges of the columns, tracing the deep grooves of the ancient carvings before sliding down to join the puddles gathering in the courtyard corners. at the edge is a single drop clinging to the top edge of a carved capital, trembling before it falls.
